Packing Light

Packing for study abroad is about creating options, making the most out of what little you have, and preparing for unexpected situations. Make a lot of outfits with a few classic items.

The Core Items

Sweater – Old Navy, Shirt – J.Crew, Jeans – Levis

Nothing says “comfort” like a pair of jeans, a button front shirt, and a cotton sweater. Aside from their comfort, these items are great because they complement each other AND work well as individual pieces.

Look 1: Back to School

Sneakers – Finish Line, Belt – Old Navy

So my first tip is simple: be prepared for anything

Look 2: Singing in the Rain

Boots – L.L. Bean, Rain Jacket – The North Face, Belt – Old Navy

So while you are packing, you should keep this in mind: weather is inevitable, but poor planning is your own fault.

Look 3: Night Out

Blazer – Gap, Shoes – Bass, Belt – Old Navy, Tie – Brooks Brothers

So, I decided to bring one or two key semi-formal pieces of clothing to spice up my casual wear. The tip here is straightforward: pack a jacket, but don’t pack a suit.

Shorts and “T-Shirt”

HAHAHA! LOL!

Teach your brother how to tie his own bowtie. Buy your boyfriend a blue oxford button front shirt. But most importantly, improve the wardrobe of a guy that is close to your heart. I’m going to show you how to do just that.

Look 1 : The Classic

Polo – L.L. Bean, Shorts – L.L. Bean, Belt – Vineyard Vines, Shoes – Sperry

So pass this along: pick up some navy.

Look 2: The Edgy

Shirt – Brooks Brothers, Shorts – J.Crew, Bow Tie – Tie Bar, Belt – L.L. Bean, Shoes – Zappos

My biggest tip here is not to fear the prep. Though I realize it can be hard to picture your average male college friend wearing a bow tie and shorts for no particular reason, when the bow tie is tied properly and paired with an oxford with the sleeves rolled up, you will never look at bow ties, and shorts for that matter, the same way again.

Look 3: The Bold

Shirt – Polo Ralph Lauren, Shorts – L.L. Bean, T-Shirt – Old Navy, Belt – L.L. Bean, Shoes – Gap

It’s true: embroidered shorts are certainly a bold statement. However, when paired with simple a shirt, belt, and shoes, the shorts make the wearer look sophisticated. So, tell your guy friends to take calculated risks.

Geek Swag

Outfit 1: More Math For You and Me!

Shirt –  Gap, Shorts – J.Crew, Shoes – Converse, Socks – J.Crew, Watch – Amazon, Bow Tie – Tie Bar

Accessorizing is a two way street. Quite simply, guys should man-cessorize just as much as women accessorize, and it is not a bad thing. In the outfit above, a pretty bland combination is made a lot more interesting with the addition of some simple items – high top Converse, an American classic; striped socks, a geek must; and a calculator watch, one of the greatest inventions of all time. Think what you will of accessorizing, but you have to admit, it makes this outfit pop.

Outfit 2: Hold It Now!

Shirt – Brooks Brothers, Pants - Banana Republic, Shoes – Vans, Suspenders – Filson, Hat – Gap

Outfit 3: Rules Were Meant to Be Broken

Cardigan – Gap, Cords – J-Crew, Shoes – Zappos, T-Shirt – Urban Outfitters

Meeting the Parents

Look 1: Grab and Go

Jeans – Gap, Belt – Zumiez, Shoes – Bass, Sweater – American Apparel, Socks – J.Crew

You just have to Keep It Simple!

Look 2: Napkins, and Menus, and Waiters! Oh My!

Shirt – J.Crew, Khakis – Dockers, Cardigan – Gap, Shoes – Bass, Belt – Old Navy

Make sure your clothes fit

Look 3: Where the Party At?

Blazer – American Living, Shirt – Banana Republic, Tie – J.Crew, Khakis – Dockers, Belt – Gap, Socks – J.Crew, Shoes – Zappos

Here is my best tip when it comes to formal wear: there is no such thing as being overdressed. The beauty of men’s formal wear is that it is all about layering.

A Hitchhikers Guide

What Not to Wear on an Airplane

Jacket – North Face, Fleece – L.L. Bean, Hoodie – Old Navy, Jeans – Levi’s, Shirt – Old Navy, Boot – L.L. Bean

You can’t sacrifice sanity for bag space. In other words, don’t plan to wear something because you can’t pack it.

The Perfect Storm

Pants – J.Crew, Shirt – Gap, Jacket – Orvis, Shoes – Toms

My solution is a lightweight cotton pant, such as a Chino, that is soft to the touch. In terms of the jacket, go for something that is versatile. For flights, I opt for lightweight, slip on sneakers, such as TOMS, that have a little more material too them and a rugged tread, just in case you need to run to catch a flight.

Men’s Fashion for Interviews

You need to know as much about your company’s business atmosphere as you do about their business functions. Treat your interview attire like you would treat your attire for a day on the job.

A Little More Than Casual

Jacket – J.Crew, Jeans – Levi’s, Sweater – Gap, Shoes – Sperry Top-Sider

The casual interview offers you a chance to practice your interview skills, including interview attire, so take it seriously and you will benefit in the long run.

Semi-Pro

Shirt – J.Crew, Tie – J.Crew, Pants – Dockers, Blazer – Brooks Brothers, Shoes – Bass

The Suit

Suit – J.Crew

How to Dress Without Jeans

* Warm Weather Revival

In the outfit below, I paired a pretty summer dress with a cardigan (in case your classes are overzealously air conditioned like mine) and some summery footwear to help your warm-weather wardrobe go the distance.

In the second outfit, shorts and a simple button-down plaid shirt are paired with cute flats and a straw fedora to channel some summer spirit. A neutral handbag finishes this outfit off for a look that would be perfect for class.

* Unique Legwear
In the second outfit, I wanted to show you a new way to wear legwarmers (or even knee socks, if you have them) under your boots. Just a hint of pattern peeking out from the boots adds interesting dimension to an outfit while keeping you warm.

* Diversify Your Pants
In this outfit, I mixed trendy harem pants with a loose tee and some cool accessories for an effortlessly chic vibe. Here’s a tip: make sure to tuck in the shirt – this makes the outfit appear more polished and you’ll achieve a breezy, relaxed effect.

Outfit Inspiration

Classic and cute

Jacket, Jeans, Shoes, Tank, Cardigan, Scarf

This outfit is colorful, simple, and classic. A striped tank will look great under a red cardigan. Pull on jeans and cute lace up boots, and add a scarf for a casual look.

A Hint of Retro

Jacket, Shoes, Flare Jeans, Headband, Necklace, Sweater

This outfit has a bit of a ’70s vibe to it. I began with a fuzzy, plush jacket for a faux fur-esque look. (One of my friends has a jacket like this, and every time she wears it, people want to “pet” her!) Pair it with a sweater, and trendy flared jeans (which are making a comeback). Finish with boat shoes, a cute necklace, and a hippie headband.

Snow Bunny

 Jacket, Cargos, Boots, Sweater, Beanie

A colorful fleece jacket looks great with a chunky knit sweater. Add some skinny cargos and these adorable boots for some stylish edge. Finish with a cozy beanie!
