Packing Light

Packing for study abroad is about creating options, making the most out of what little you have, and preparing for unexpected situations. Make a lot of outfits with a few classic items.

The Core Items

Sweater – Old Navy, Shirt – J.Crew, Jeans – Levis

Nothing says “comfort” like a pair of jeans, a button front shirt, and a cotton sweater. Aside from their comfort, these items are great because they complement each other AND work well as individual pieces.

Look 1: Back to School

Sneakers – Finish Line, Belt – Old Navy

So my first tip is simple: be prepared for anything

Look 2: Singing in the Rain

Boots – L.L. Bean, Rain Jacket – The North Face, Belt – Old Navy

So while you are packing, you should keep this in mind: weather is inevitable, but poor planning is your own fault.

Look 3: Night Out

Blazer – Gap, Shoes – Bass, Belt – Old Navy, Tie – Brooks Brothers

So, I decided to bring one or two key semi-formal pieces of clothing to spice up my casual wear. The tip here is straightforward: pack a jacket, but don’t pack a suit.

Shorts and “T-Shirt”

HAHAHA! LOL!

Teach your brother how to tie his own bowtie. Buy your boyfriend a blue oxford button front shirt. But most importantly, improve the wardrobe of a guy that is close to your heart. I’m going to show you how to do just that.

Look 1 : The Classic

Polo – L.L. Bean, Shorts – L.L. Bean, Belt – Vineyard Vines, Shoes – Sperry

So pass this along: pick up some navy.

Look 2: The Edgy

Shirt – Brooks Brothers, Shorts – J.Crew, Bow Tie – Tie Bar, Belt – L.L. Bean, Shoes – Zappos

My biggest tip here is not to fear the prep. Though I realize it can be hard to picture your average male college friend wearing a bow tie and shorts for no particular reason, when the bow tie is tied properly and paired with an oxford with the sleeves rolled up, you will never look at bow ties, and shorts for that matter, the same way again.

Look 3: The Bold

Shirt – Polo Ralph Lauren, Shorts – L.L. Bean, T-Shirt – Old Navy, Belt – L.L. Bean, Shoes – Gap

It’s true: embroidered shorts are certainly a bold statement. However, when paired with simple a shirt, belt, and shoes, the shorts make the wearer look sophisticated. So, tell your guy friends to take calculated risks.
